EXTERNSHIP PROGRAMME AT BELL EQUINE

Bell Equine Veterinary welcomes visits from final year veterinary students, both from the UK and overseas, priority is given to UK students. If you are a foreign student, you must be able to speak good English. The purpose of the externship programme is to provide real-life learning experiences for senior veterinary students interested in equine practice. The externship programme allows students to visit for periods of 2-4 weeks (minimum 2 weeks). We try to keep the system as flexible as possible, thereby allowing the students to choose whether they go out in the field or remain at the hospital. However, we expect our students to assist our vets and nurses as needed. They will be expected to help with emergency work and the care of hospitalised patients out of hours and at weekends. Efforts are made to allow each extern some time off during the weekends, scheduling and caseload permitting.

Students are primarily here to observe, but will be given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience wherever possible. Our clinicians and nurses make every effort to explain and discuss cases and procedures. We know that students visit our practice to learn and we try to facilitate this as much as possible; we aim to maintain a learning environment, and students are encouraged to participate in rounds, journal clubs, seminars, etc.

The practice has three bedsits available for accommodating students on-site. Each of the bed-sits has its own bathroom and cooking facilities.  On-site accommodation must be reserved when scheduling an externship.  Students are responsible for providing their own food, and should be aware that the nearest food shop is approximately 2 miles away from the clinic. Public transport is very limited in the area, and students are encouraged to provide their own transport.  In order to cover the costs of cleaning, electricity etc, we charge students a minimal rent (currently £47 per week for 2008 and £52.87 for 2009).  No deposit is required, but any avoidable breakages will be charged to the student.

As you will be assisting the vets with clients, a neat appearance and appropriate attire is required. Ragged, faded jeans and t-shirts are not considered appropriate attire.

Potential interns are strongly encouraged to participate in our externship program prior to applying for an internship. If you are interested in applying for an internship, you should make us aware of this fact whilst you are with us.

Practice Responsibilities to the Extern:
The practice will do its best to provide a safe learning environment that will help the students expand their skills and knowledge-base, and develop a better understanding of the benefits equine practice has to offer. It is anticipated that a four week externship period will be required to meet all of the learning objectives, which include:

1. Gain experience in basic equine clinical skills, including blood sampling, drug administration, catheter placement, nasogastric intubation, etc
2. Understand and determine treatment plans and diagnostic procedures for common equine diseases
3. Become competent in performing routine equine clinical examinations, including orthopaedic, ophthalmological, dental and neurological procedures
4. Understand the indications, and be competent in setting up and monitoring intravenous fluid therapy in horses
5. Gain experience of common sedation techniques and of general anaesthesia in horses
6. Become competent in obtaining routine equine radiographs, and gain experience in interpreting radiographs, ultrasounds and magnetic resonance images
7. Gain experience in the interpretation of clinical pathology results
8. Gain some understanding of the financial and ethical implications of equine practice.
